Children & Families

Children:

“What is going on with my child? Why are they behaving this way? What is wrong?”

Sound familiar?

Children’s emotional distress, including depression or anxiety, often looks very different than in adults. Some children display their distress outwardly, displaying aggressive, agitated, oppositional or angry behavior. Others withdraw or shut down, becoming more moody or irritable. As a parent, it can be heartbreaking to see your child suffer and not know what to do.

As a parent myself, I know firsthand how hard this can be. I understand and have so much compassion for where you are. You are right to seek support so that you can be the kind of parent you want to be. I’ll add that I have deep respect for the trust I receive in being selected to support your child.

When I work with children, my first goal is to help the child feel safe and welcome. The primary component to child therapy is the child building a trusted relationship with their therapist. I am non-intrusive and instead use a gentle and playful approach to help the child feel empowered in their therapeutic process and meet their goals. I use play and art, their natural language, to meet the child in their world to help and encourage the development of appropriate emotional language and expression.

Parents:

“I feel lost and like I don’t know what I’m doing.”

Does this sound like you?

Parenting is indeed one of the hardest jobs you’ll ever do, and we all need support from time to time.

I understand how you feel and what you’re struggling with. Many of the parents I work with have started off feeling the exact same way: helpless, hopeless, frustrated, and annoyed. And worse, feeling like they’re failing or doing something wrong.

As a parent myself, I have deep compassion for the challenges of being a parent. As someone who’s worked with children for over 30 years, I hold extensive knowledge and experience of child development and social/emotional behavior. I understand the ins and outs of children, their behavior, motivations, ways of thinking and expressing, and most importantly, how to work with them to have more collaboration and cooperation.

In parenting, looking at ourselves, understanding our own behavior and motivations is key to successful parenting. Becoming a parent can open up all kinds of emotions, thoughts and behaviors in you that perhaps surprise you or that you don’t feel proud of. It’s okay. You are a human and you’re doing the best you can AND you’ve now taken this very important step to seek support.

When you work with me, we will work collaboratively to identify problem behaviors. I will offer feedback, guide and coach you on strategies to support change. I will also share insights about developmental norms and use neuroscience data to help you better understand your child and their behavior.

You understand that doing your own inner work is vital to the process to help you gain clarity and feel supported in establishing foundational parenting goals.

This service is designed for parents who want support and guidance with their parenting skills but want to focus specifically on behavioral changes, routines, and discipline. In this work, parents focus on specific behavior they want changed or improved. I coach behavior modification strategies, offer insights as to what may drive the behavior, and help you create a tangible plan of action that you can implement at home with your child.
